Prevalence of ectoparasites in a population of feral cats from north central Florida during the summer. What Are Feral Cats? The domestic cat has increased in popularity as a household pet in recent decades, surpassing the dog to become America' s most numerous pet. 1 Despite the enhanced status of cats as human companions, millions of unwanted cats are admitted to animal shelters each year and most of these cats are euthanatized because homes cannot be found for them. Debate about the true impact of free-roaming cats on the environment , on feline welfare, and as a reservoir of feline and zoonotic diseases is ongoing, often emotional, and fueled largely by a lack of sound scientific data on which to base credible conclusions. Separating the impacts of free-roaming, owned cats from those of unowned cats is also difficult. Definitions of various cat populations defy universal acceptance and focus variably on ownership status, lifestyle, and degree of socialization. Cats may be defined as free-roaming if they are not confined to a yard or house, a definition based on confinement of the animal rather than ownership or degree of socialization. Strictly speaking, feral cats are defined as those that are untamed and evasive. They are either born in the wild and lack socialization or are abandoned to the wild and become untrusting of humans. Body condition of feral cats and the effect of neutering.

Considerable debate exists regarding the most appropriate methods for controlling feral cat populations, both from humane and logistical points of view. The physical condition of feral cats has not been reported, and it is not known if these cats benefit from neutering. This study investigates the body condition of feral cats by measuring body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS; Burkholder,...

Rabies prevention and management of cats in the context of trap-neuter-vaccinate-release programmes.

Domestic cats are an important part of many Americans' lives, but effective control of the 60-100 million feral cats living throughout the country remains problematic. Although trap-neuter-vaccinate-return (TNVR) programmes are growing in popularity as alternatives to euthanizing feral cats, their ability to adequately address disease threats and population growth within managed cat colonies is...

Developing a community-based feral cat control program for Kangaroo Island

Various methods have been used to eliminate or control feral cats from selected areas, often islands. These include poisoned baits, biological agents (e.g. feline panleucopaenia), shooting, trapping and exclusion fencing, often applied in combination (e.g. Veitch 1985, 1991; van Rensbury et al. 1987; Coman 1991; Newsome 1991; Bloomer & Bester 1992). These techniques can be labourand area-intens...
